In the Avid, the first bin opened, that metadata will appear to overwrite the metadata in all bins opened after.

For example:

I was working on a film for HBO (Idlewild), and all the key numbers were wrong (They could not cut the film). So, I typed in all of the correct key numbers. I then asked everyone to close all bins and exit out of the Avid. The idea is to open my bin first and that key number metadata will ripple down stream updating the sequence, thus a perfect cut list is made.

The Technique:

First) close all bins and exit the Avid

Second) open my new bin with the updated key number metadata and keep this bin open

Third) open up all other bins keeping my new metadata bin open.

Forth) the Avid will appear to update all metadata for the sequences and clips. A perfect cut list can now be made with the correct updated key number metadata.

If one wanted to lock in this new metadata into the .mxf files.

Consolidate making all new media files with the proper embedded metadata for added redundancy and fail safe future conform activities.

The Avid has a technicique that if you hold down alt (windows) or option (mac) key upon launching your project in the user/project selection dialog box, the Avid project will open up with all bins closed.
