Any tips to get better menu (no jaggies) in Avid DVD?

Spent a few hours trying to get a better 'hover' highlight in Avid DVD with no luck.  Its just that when you hover over a menu item the highliting created is crude and rough whatever the element source (generated text or imported files).  I've long accepted this as a DVD authoring limitation but is it just a Sonic Avid DVD thing?  Would say Adobe Encore permit better highlights based on properly using a 2 layer Photoshop (with alpha) file?  I've tried the subpicture overlay route in Avid DVD but it just generates its own rough fill based on the subpicture shape (and its all a bit confusing!)

It just really lets this design showreel project down :-(

Thanks
