Recently, I have detected, that the Performance Monitor of Windows 7 does not work any more. I could open the performance monitor, however, I cannot add any additional performance instance (MS calls them "counters"). The window which opens, if I click the "+" button (add instances) does not list the required performance entities. It now shows instances which are unknown.
All efforts to recover the correct instances did not work. At this time, I did not know which software created the error. I contacted Microsoft support, but they could not help either. All their prposals did not succeed. So finally I had to re-install Windows from scratch. With every installed instance, I have tested the performance monitor functions. When I installed Media Composer editing suite, there is a set of functions, which are installed initially. The first two functions are Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable SP1 (x86) and Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable SP1 (x64). Exactly when the installer runs these components, performance manager fails. First it shows no content in the add performance instances window, and when the two C++ components finished installation, the add performance instances window shows unknown elemnts but not the usual components.
This is a very serious bug and should be corrected soon. Otherwise many people will be forced to a Windows re-installation. MC-installation will then kill the performance monitor function again, hence a dead lock situation.
I hope Avid will react quickly.
