Blackmagic & 7D workflows using ProRes instead of DNxHD?

Hello all.

Until I started an outside project, all of my previous workflows had been the same due to using the same camera on all projects, and everything was wonderful.

A few weeks ago I started a project using 1080p footage obtained from BlackMagic (ProRes material) and the Canon 7D (h.264 material).

When I was initially bringing in the footage on my school's Avid 7, I was planning to use DNxHD 175. But after selecting DNxHD 175 for the BlackMagic footage, an avid prompt came up suggesting I use Apple ProRes HQ MXF. So I went ahead and did that. Footage was transcoding at close to 1:1 size.

I wound up also choosing Apple ProRes HQ MXF for the 7D files (h.264). Changing that compression, the transcodes were coming in at 3 times their original size.

I recently tried going the AMA route, but using Avid 6 on my MacBook is giving me a big FU--lots of stuttering and pausing, even with the non-h.264.

When exporting my finished sequences (it is a web series) using ProRes, the finished product looks very dark--much darker than it looks while editing.

My questions are: Is it okay for my workflow that I am working with ProRes rather than DNxHD? Is this possibly affecting why my exports are so dark? And if not, why might they be coming out so dark?

Thank you for any help.
