Using the "Tape" column, 5 things can create a link:
I have seen masterclips automatically disappear from opening up an old bin. I have to select the masterclips and choose relink. Sometimes linking requires the masterclips bin to be open at the same time to refresh the sequence.
1) Masterclip Name (don't always need, example - subclips)
2) Start Timecode (can also use KeyNumber Start)
3) Duration (resulting in End Timecode and End Key Number)
4) Project Name (masterclips can link from a different Project)
5) Tape Name
In theory, when you modify a masterclip and give it a new "Tape" name, the masterclip should then get the current project name updated in the "Project" column metadata (doesn't always happen)
You can only have metadata populated in either Tape Name or SourceFile column, with the exception of how video mixdowns appear in a bin and the actual video mixdown .mxf (Avid embeds "Signature Source Mob" in the "Tape" column and does not embed any timecode in the Avid video mixdown .mxf file, in the "SourceFile" column you will find the the name of the .mxf file that lives in an avid activated mxf folder structure)
Sequences and subclips can use a relink command when you select the masterclips that you want to point to said sequence or subclips. The command is called relink selected.
3 things can be used to a selected sequence/subclip to link to masterclips.
1) Tape Name
2) Start Timecode (KeyNumber Start)
3) Duration
note about linking:
1) I have seen the metadata of new masterclips override and clear out the metadata of the old masterclips. So just be alert about the metadata in the columns.
2) For Avid Linking I have more luck using the "Tape" column.
Is this helpful about metadata linking to essence?
