Consolidating. Foreign compression type error

Hi everyone.

I get the following error when I try to consolidate AVCHD clips in order to edit the sound in pro tools.

Some of the items selected for consolidate contained foreign compression types, which could not be consolidated. See the console for details.To consolidate these clips, please transcode them to a native compression type first.

Console output.

Is there anyway to get around this? E.g. a plugin or codec? Or do I have to transcode the audio first?

Random Files Being Quarantined - Please help

Team Awesome,

The past two days, on two different projects, on two different brands of external drives (both Mac Formatted) I have had files quarantined just out of the blue. Yesterday I created a new title and after I saved it Avid went into scan mode and quarantined 15 files - some of which I had already been working with and had in a timeline. Then today, on a different project, I was working along and Avid went into scan mode and quarantined 10 files. All of these files were in my timeline that I had been working on for the past two weeks and have played fine. The error I get is:

A composition::Convert From AAF - Undable to convert Media Descriptor

What is going on? I have tried pulling them out of the Quarantine folder and deleting the data bases and rescanning the drive but it quarantines them again. I have never had this happen before version 7. Is there a known bug with version 7 on a PC? Any help, insight or work around would be appreciated.

MC7 The system cannot find the file specified.

Hi,

I need help, I get this error when trying to play an AMA linked media!!! :

 

"* File 'D:\MEDIA\Fa***g\Day * - Wed **th\VIDEO\Sc 31?\MVI_0489.MOV' not found.

 

* ExceptioThe system cannot find the file specified. n: SYS_ERROR, status:2, msg:"

I can only suspect what's causing this, but that's generally the situation:

I got the unnamed/unrated footage on a HFS+ drive. Copied the files onto my PC [Win7]. I AMA linked all the media accordingly, created new collumn in each bin and started rating and naming the media. After I was done I renamed the source files on my drive from i.e. MVI_0489 to SC31_SH12_TK1_GOOD. 

Now I tried to relink the AMA media, I tried deleting existing media files and perform a AMA Link from scratch. I get the same result anyway. This above message comes up, even though the source files are named comlpetely differently now.

I tried to create a new project - same thing.

I deleted all the MDB and PMR files in all the existing bin folders - same thing.

When I rename the source back to what it was - everything works great, but I need the files to be named correctly before I hand the drive back.

My guess is there is either the files are blocked (they're not Read Only btw) somehow, some sort of Mac to PC issue; or Avid cannot seem to forget what those files names were before and gets confused. Any idea how to refresh Avid's mind?

One more thing, maybe it's important - I was renaming the source files having MC open.


I use MC 7.0.2, the files are H.264 shot on 5DMarkII and III.

I'm supposed to start editing today and I'm stuck!

Anyone use DA's Beauty Box with Avid MC 7?

Considering trying their demo - but finding NO info online re: how well it actually work with Avid MC. I know it'sa a new release, but is anyone using it?

And if I've committed an offense by posting about a non-Avid product here, I apologize - I'll take the question down if that sort of thing isn't 'done'....  I'm just hoping to get some feedback.  I'm relatively new to Avid, have academic, and no access to the BCC suite, so I'm looking for options.

Multiple languages workflow solution needed.

I'm working for a broadcat television doing a lot of VOD in differents langages.

For that purpose they are editing a lot (15-20 / week) of trailers (they are doing their own trailers from full lengh movies so that all the trailers have the same specifications like length ...).

They are equipped with Z420 with MC7.03, ISIS5500 and interplay.

 

The question: i edit a trailler from a movie, let's call it Monster_EN (for english).

I have a timeline in English.

Now i have to conform this edit with the same movie in French. I received the movie Monster_FR (with the same TC as the English file).The source movies are checkin to in interplay all in the same codec.

 

What would be the workflow to keep my original edit and create an new version relinked to the FRench version?

 

Any idea?

Uninstall issue...

I´ve downloaded the Avid MC 7 trial, running Maverick - my problem is that I earlier was running AMC 6.0 on M.Lion when I (by mistake) upgrade to Mavrick and now I having problem uninstalling AMC 6.0 on Maverick before installing the trial AMC 7. Messy? yes but I someone will help me out.

Avid DNxHD codec form / 10.9: "Mavericks"

Since MAC released  10.9: "Mavericks" on October 22, 2013, there has not been any word on if there is going to be a fix so that I can install the Avid DNxHD codec on to my Mac Book Pro running the new 10.9: "Mavericks, is there any info that I can find out so that I can see if I need to down grade or not I would hate to down grade back to lion and find out that there is a fix tomorrow.

AMA & Avid 6.0.5

Hi,

We're having issues when AMA'ing with Avid 6.0.5. So far this is a problem with all the media that we AMA, including GoPro, 5D, FS700, and misc other cameras. The clips are coming in with a freeze frame at the end of the clips. The duration of the freeze seems related to the length of the clip, such as several seconds for a 20 minute clip.

This is causing problems for grouping and upressing footage. This didn't seem to be a problem when we used Avid 6.0.4. I was wondering if this is a known bug? Would going back to 6.0.4 fix the issue, and would going to a later version of Avid fix the issue?

6.5.4.1 oddity

I am currently working a project in two locations.  Both Mac based.  One system has MC 7.0.2  The other had MC 6.5.3.

I carry the media and project files from one system to the other.

All has been working fine until we updated the 6.5.3 systemt to 6.5.4.1.

Now, when I open a sequence most recently worked on in 7.0.3 in 6.5.4.1, some Video clips (seems random at this point) will now have empty effect icons on them.

Cannot find a pattern as to why it is some clips and not others.

These are sequences that have a mixture of SD and HD.  Other than that they are very simple sequences.

Not a killer issue, but it does cause some issues as Avid see them and complains at certain task.

Problem to export 16:9 with subcap

Hi,

On MC 5.5.3 I have a problem with exporting a sequence to a 16:9 format (DV or MOV).

When I export the timeline and play the output back in VLC or QuickTime player the following thing is happening:

- When subtitles are shown, the format is 16:9

- When no subtitles are shown the format becamse 4:3.

I tried all kind of settings (also customized), but all with the same result.

Any help would be welcome.

Importing 5D footage with external audio & syncing

Hello,

I am a beginner, editing my first Avid project alone. I have only edited one short film before under supervision and with access to help.

I have my footage on 5D and my sound on an external sound recorder in .wav format.

What is the best way (or at least one way) to import the footage to Avid?

Also, once I have it all imported, does anyone have some sort of best practise guide on how to sync the audio with the video? I'm prepared to do it manually, but would I put it all together in a sequence and then pair it with the sound, or can I somehow pair the audio with the video clips before I start making my sequence?

Any help is greatly appreciated, whether you take the time to explain it, or whether you have a link to an online guide.

IRE levels must be between 7.5 - 78

Howdy,

     I have just been informed that one of the Networks we are about to broadcast on (Daystar) has set there levels at 7.5 and 78 IRE. We already edit to 7.5 but our top is obviously 100 with a lot of things brought down to around 90. Obviously others are doing this since they air other programs but for me this will be something new.

     Anyone have a suggestion for getting there without having everything look crushed?

     I am working with AE 6 and AVID MC 7.02. I do a lot of my work in AE so that is critical but my final products are made on the AVID as is the eventual FINAL product.

Low cost shared projects and storage!

Hi everyone,

I've long been interested in low-cost, 'smaller' alternatives to the likes of Unitiy, Isis, Editshare, Terrablock etc.

While they are fantastic solutions they come at a price not fit for everyone's budget, and sometimes they are just not viable at all on smaller productions (due to physical space and noise requirements).

I've worked on Isis and Editshare extensively in the past and think they are both great solutions.

However, the latest feature I'm about to start on simply doesn't have the budget for a Unity/Isis/Editshare and the editor and I were ready to tear our hair out knowing we'd be working in separate Avid projects with separate sets of media.

I've successfully setup and tested an indiestor box in the past and that worked flawlessly, but it wasn't feasible to build a separate Linux box for this job.

So we turned to Vidsharx. Bizarrely enough, it seems like Vidsharx has been completely abandoned by the developer. I've tried contacting him a few times with no luck, and they closed down their support forum quite some time ago.
After much tinkering I was finally able to get Vidsharx working with a direct ethernet connection between two Mac Pros running OSX 10.7 and Avid Media Composer 6.5.4. We are using one of the Mac Pros as a server AND running Avid on it.
Project and media sharing worked flawlessly in our tests, with both the editor and I scrubbing through, playing back and editing the same media (1080p DNxHD 36) simulatenously. We used a simple GTECH GRAID 4TB over FW800 as our test and had no issues.

Docuemtnation for Vidsharx is very spotty (and much of it is in fact on the old xmcore website). I've heard that many people in the past have tested it/given up on it/successfully used it, but there is not much about it online.

If anyone is interested I can write up a little document with how I was able to get it to work with some notes etc.
It might just help some people.

I'm really chuffed with Vidsharx and disappointed that it seems to have been abandoned entirely. It seems perfect for small editor setups and isn't nearly as expensive or noisy as a Unity or Editshare! If only they continued to develop and support it...

Having problem linking to AMa with Hamburg Pro codec

Hi,

 

I recently installed The Hamburg Pro EASY4avid codec to import and work with Mpeg-2 and when I attempt to link MXF files to AMA it links to the wrong drive (local C: drive instead of the Raid) and also it gives me only 9 seconds of the beginning of the clip

everything was fine before I installed the Plugin, I tried to search for answers but nobody seems to have experienced this.

any hint would be most welcomed, thanks!

7.0.3 segment mode bug?

Prior to v7, when the "link selection toggle" was off and I was in segment mode I could hold down CMD (or option...can't remember which) to kind of go into that mode as long as I held the key down. In seven this isn't the case any more. Any chance this will come back? I like to keep "link selection" off but use this shortcut for when I need it.

Also, when segment dragging clips from one track to another sometimes it won't let me go back to the original track without unclicking and then clicking on the clip again.

Failed to write index table to file.... MC6

Been running into this problem on some of my files... They are just basic sports clips ive downloaded from youtube (mp4) for a personal project. Been searching online for possible solutions but they always seem to run into a dead end... ive deleted the 'creating' folder, there's plenty of space on my external HD, and last night I literally deleted every file/project I had to basically start fresh... still got this error in all cases.

Just some info: All the files are from the same source smaller files import perfect 10mb-25mb, but ones around 100+ and even lower get almost done processing and then I hit the error... I just don't get it, there can't be a cap of 100ish mb... they are all in the same folder, same HD, same source, same file type... im just confused.

*Also I have no problem importing any size mp4 or .mov from my friends T4i camera, and these same youtube clips I cant import into Media Composer 6, import fine into my crappy iMovie '09

Strange ALT behavior in MC 7.0.3... Can you reproduce?

Hi all, 

wanting to confirm/check two strange ALT behaviors in MC 7.0.3.
So please try and reproduce....


ISSUE 1:

As stated in the Editing Manual:

If you enable Link Selection and want to select a single segment and not the
segments linked to it, Alt+click (Windows) the segment.

This doesn’t work here in my setup.
Being in Segment Mode (or with Smart Tool enabled)
By pressing ALT, the cursor becomes the normal windows arrow, and nothing happens when clicking a clip...

Same thing happens when you have Link Selection disabled, and in Segment Mode.
pressing ALT + selecting clips... it doesn’t do anything and SHOULD select the clip + the linked clips.



ISSUE 2:

Also in Segment Mode (or with Smart Tool enabled)
ALT + T (where T is Mark Clip with IN and OUT point) should give you a Clip Mark, ignoring Track selection, to the nearest cuts.
This isn't working properly with Segment Mode active. It just selects all clips where the Timeline Bar is parked...?



I was just trying to edit with the Smart Tool enabled, and these two issues made it impossible to edit with Smart Tool...

Double clicking bins?

I just downloaded MC7 and when I double click on a bin it won't pop up infront of the open windows?  So if something is hiding behind a timeline I have to move the timeline aside to grab the bin?  I've tried R-clicking to "open selected bin(s)" but that does work either.  Any suggestions?

Can't add scene number to Group Clips?

I'm really dumbfounded by this. Seems like it should be so simple.

I just created a Group Clip and want to add a Scene Number to it in the Scene column in the browser. The rest of my clips are labeled with Scene/Take numbers to organize them without changing the clip name. 

Avid allows me to enter a value in the scene column for my group clip, but when you hit Enter or Return, the number just disappears. What's going on here? 

Is there some kind of fix to this? Confused

Customized Timeline Views - track names?

Anyone out there know if changed track names get saved in customized timeline views?  And, if not, is there a way to save customized track names?  I want to use the same naming convention across multiple sequences, can't figure out how to do it!
