Patching Tracks

I'm making the transition to Avid from FCP and Premiere and I'm finding the simplest tasks quite difficult. I'd like to stack video clips on other video clips while retaining the corresponding audio for both. I'm not sure that I'm making myself clear - I think the term is audio patching? Basically I'd like to have my first clip on the V1 and A2 tracks and my second clip on the V2 and A3 tracks, and so on and so forth. Is that possible? When I try it - I manage to get the second clip onto the V2 track but the audio of the second clip replaces the audio of the first on A1.
