Now that Avid has added "segment mode" to the relational color corrector would it be possible for Avid to add the ability to color correct on a custom bin field, kinda like they have added options in the relink to custom fields?  What I would like is the ability to create a column in the bin, or use an existing comment column and enter alphanumeric data that I could use in the relational color corrector.  This would be especially helpful with dealing with file based material that no longer has the uniformity that tape captured media has when it comes to src clip name.

This has been a frequent request on the Avid Community FR forum, from mouse-averse editors seeking an alternative to moving clips between tracks. The maneuver is normally handled with constricted lateral movement (to maintain sync), using Ctrl+Shift+Mouse Dragging up or down on Highlighted Clip(s). 

I personally like this MC tool very much since I edit all day with a mouse in one hand and have my left hand on the keyboard.

But nonetheless, here's what I discovered can possibly do the same task WITHOUT USING A MOUSE, by using a Windows OS 7 Pro (or other?) built-in tool found in Control Panel/Ease of Access. It is called "Mouse Keys".

You may want to play first with mouse movement and tweak ballistics to taste***. Mouse Keys works with the NUM LOCKS Keypad # keys to navigate the mouse pointer in various directions and then it also permits mouse-like selection/drag/drop of whatever is below the mouse pointer*.

* This is done with the "/" Forward Slash key followed by the "5" key (always use the numeric keypad).

Note: If you normally prepare for segment-highlighting your MC Clip(s) on the timeline by having the Red Segment Arrow pre-lit, your track(s) pre-selected, and your In-Out Marks visible, this works well. Pressing "/" will result in a Highlight of your Clip Selection. 

Next, to engage the mouse drag function, press "0".

At this point, you should have a highlighted clip that you now can Drag Up (press "8") or Down (press "2"). And yes, you can move your selection left and right with "4" and "6" as well.

I'm pretty sure you do not need to worry about using CTRL+SHIFT during an UP or DOWN drag, but you may want to double check sync on your results.

Then you Drop your Dragged Clip(s) by pressing the  "." period key on numeric keypad.

That's it. To review: Move mouse over your clip(s) pressing keypad keys; press "/", "5", "0", "8" (or "2" for down),"."

As always, try at your own risk, but hopefully this may give "Mouse-Only" fans something to try.

**And yes, you can still use your real mouse at the same time.

*** If the mouse moves too slowly for you, there is a setting on Mouse Keys to speed it up.

Hi has anyone written an active-x plugin for iNews in managed c# .net?

Funny thing is, I did and it was working, and as I started to expand out the functionality I did something and now it has stopped working complertly. And it has me stumped.

I can see the entry of my plugin in inews  menu Tools->Plugins but when I select it i get the message "Cannot Create control. May not be installed"

Anyone have any ideas?

My ama clips are doing weird things.  Seemed to be working fine, then I opened the bin for 2006 and all of the files were offline. 

I took the advice to delete the msmfmid.pmr and msmmmob.mdb files.   Now a lot of them (not all) are offline, showing the black media offline thumbnail.   When you play them in the source window, they are offline.

Then for some of them, I opened up the original bin, and double-clicked  to open and view the file, and then the related subclips linked, in that they play, but the media offline thumbnail remains.

There are hundreds of clips in this project, from which there are numerous subclips from each. I am still going through the project to see if anytihing remains offline completely.   It's likely something does, as it refused to link the entire 2006 bin before and had it offline.  

THere's nothing special about that bin, no apparent reason it would do that.

So.. tracing down ghosts in the machine is wasting a lot of my time. Avid seems buggy.  

The clips are varous mov files - motion jpeg, m4v, mp4 etc.  They linked before just fine.  Other than that recent post showing that they were linking only to audioclips - but I restarted, recaptured thos clips, and the problem was solved.

What would cause this media offline weirdness and how can I fix it and get on with my project?  Thanks in advance.

I downloaded new free version, Media-First, installed it, but when I try to open it, I get main edit page but no buttons will work; only makes chirp noise. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

The Audio Punch-In tool doesn't work any longer for me as it did for years.

Scenario:Mark-in point is set. Input source: windows mixer. When I want to start a voice over, MC make only "Pling". No error message, nothing. The same is true if I hit the Play In/Out Button.
I can enter in the Punch-In tool whatever I want: New channel, existig channel, different target bins, with or without mark out point, with or without pre/post/handles.

Where is my mistake? I have no idea where to search. Probably it is something within the settings, as the system is setup new.

My system: New built computer with i7-7700K, new Win 10 Prof, fresh installed MC 8.9 one month ago.
The Microphone is connected via audio-input on the mainboard. With the connected loudspeaker I can hear that it is working.

Hi! Since I've installed WIN 10 PRO on my PC, I received "OS ERROR" on launch my MC (version 8.5)! Every day! I've followed these tips (http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Error_Message/en364211), but nothing changed! I have to close the application and restart PC. What can I do to solve it definitely?? Is there a way to limit phrasefind to only index certain bins?

I have a 100 hours of rushes that I want indexing. But I have 1000 hours of SFX that is pointless to be indexed.

I recently purchased a JVC GY-HM170U 4K camcorder. While it seems to record wonderful images, I have found that when editing I cannot push in on the image any further than I sued to be able to with regular old standard resolution images. I had thought/hoped that I would be able to push in quite a ways with a 4K image.

I record in AVCHD files, transfer those to my drive, then Link using Source Browser in Avid Media Composer. But when I Resize those images, they start to break up at only 140%... I tried directly importing the same file (instead of Source Browsing) and got the same effect.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks, as always.

New Virtual Machine option for Media Composer 

Avid is actively working on a new licensing option to allow Media Composer to work in a virtual environment.  Users can just spin up a new version of Media Composer off a virtualized server.  

Here is some background on the enviroment:

What is VM?  A virtual machine (VM) is an emulation of a computer system as a substitute for a real (physical) machine.  VM’s provide the functionality needed to run entire operating systems and the applications and programs that run within them. A virtual machine, usually known as a “guest,” is created within another computing environment referred to as a "host." Multiple virtual machines can exist within a single host at one time.  A hypervisor facilitates abstraction of physical hardware resources allowing users to create and manage virtual machines as well as manage allocation of physical resources.

What is PCoIP?  PC-over-IP,  is a high performance display protocol used to  deliver a virtual desktop to an endpoint device. 

What is VDI? Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI)  is a desktop virtualization approach in which a desktop operating system runs and is managed in a data center.  The desktop image is delivered over a network to an endpoint device, which allows the user to interact with the OS and its applications as if it were running locally.   All of the data still resides in the data center. 

When will this be available?  Late Q2 2017

Everytime I launch Licence manager I get a Startup Error and I can't open it.  It's called "Startup Error" and then says "An error has occurred during startup:" then a whole load of stuff that seems to refer to Java.  Any ideas appreciated.  (It had been working previously and I don't know what I've done different since)

Hello, we want to buy a custom build MacPro 5,1 with Titan XP from www.create.pro.
Titan XP was not made specifically for mac so they provide custom cables to power it. They say the Titan is not flashed, it is standard.
My question is: will Media Composer work fine in this configuration?

We have noticed a problem that began showing up with earlier IPE 3.x builds that did not exist in IPE 2.x.  The issue is that ALL spanned media clips (regardless of format and mostly for our P2 ingest clients) that are checked in show up as "partial offline" (BLUE media status icon) AFTER you do "Update Status from Media Indexer" with Interplay Access.   The QM_TRACK_INFO shows that all tracks are the same length and when the spanned clip is brought into Media Composer there is no offline media on the editors.  All content is available.  AAF dump and examination of the media and clip seem to indicate correct track lengths (even with the cumulative length with the span). 

Ingesting the same clip on an IPE 2.78 system here retains the "green" online status (Regardless of IPWS version).  There doesn't seem to be any harm to the customers other than the "blue" partial status on Access which they are concerned about loss of media. (all frames are present on editors)

To summarize - creating a master clip that contains tracks with multiple media files results in partial offline status on Access after "update from media indexer".  The same issue did not exist in in earlier Interplay versions.

If this is something that can be looked at, we (and I'm sure our P2 clients) would appreciate it.  I have posted media and an AAFs (exported from AutoIngest AND Interplay Access) as examples.  We would expect it to only be address in current and future versions of whichever product determined to be having a problem with the media.

I'm currently setting up a project. The audio came from a Sound Devices recorder. Each character had their own Lavalier and track. So I would like to edit with this organisation in mind.

There are different amount of channels on different source clips. 

How can I make Avid understand that as an example 'TRK 3' should go to Audio Track 3 in the timline, and 'TRK 7' should go to Audio Track 7? If a clip has 3 audio channels, Avid simply puts the audio to tracks 1 to 3 by default. Ignoring the metadata containg information that these are tracks (TRK) 3,6 & 7.

Any ideas what I should do to get a reasonable workflow?

I have installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled MC First 3 times now, but the sample sequence the first tutorial video says is supposed to be included never shows up in the timeline or bins.  Where do I find it to use please?
