Avid Media Composer & DaVinci Resolve Round Trip Bug/Defect

OS: MacOS Catalina 10.15.4
Avid Media Composer: 2020.04.0

DaVinci Resolve: 16.2.1.017

Encountered error during a round trip workflow: Avid Media Composer to DaVinci and then back to Avid Media Composer. Issue occurs while importing DaVinci AAF back into Media Composer to complete the round trip.

Steps to reproduce:


1. Import clips in Avid Media Composer and create sequence.
2. Export sequence to AAF (video only workflow, drop audio).
3. Import AAF into DaVinci Resolve (swap out low resolution clips for BRAW as needed).

4. Apply grade and Deliver 'Avid AAF' basic settings (unique file names).

5. Import AAF into Avid Media Composer (step produces error).

Note: Also tried using /Users/Shared/AvidMediaComposer/Avid MediaFiles/MXF/0/ (folders) import method.

Online posts seem to suggest it's a fairly common workflow and should be supported.

Issue appears to be in Avid Media Composer, but could be file produced by AAF Resolve, so covering all basis here.

Error messages in Avid Media Composer (in order of appearing):

FASTER THUMBNAILS - was Thumbnails keep changing

2018.12.9 on OSX 10.14.1

I just started a project and the thumbnails I see in either Frame View Tab or Script View Tab keep changing.  And when the change they are Thumbnails from other clips!!!

Any ideas?

EDIT:  I THINK I MIGHT HAVE FOUND IT.  I noticed that Faster Thumbnails was on.  Turned it off and they seem to have gone back to what they should be.  Will keep an eye on it.

Ok that was definitely the issue.  BUT ....  This feature seems to be turned on in ALL my bins.  I can not figure out how to disable it globally  HELP!!!

New Blue Titler Pro activation

Out of nowhere my titler pro shows a red cross. New blue app manager says it can not activate it via avid servers

(Unable to activate because of failure to communicate with AvidELF)

@Marianna can you help?

update:

Tried to sign out and sign in in the nw blue app. Doesn´t help.

Uninstalled all new blue apps and checked my avid downloads. Can´t find new blue titler pro anymore. Instead I found new pro titler 7 essentials. Tried to install that, problem ist the same in new blue app manager - it can´t activate new blue titler pro. Even worse the effect ist now unknown in my timeline and I get a bunch of new new blue effects, that I don´t even wanted - all watermarked /in demo mode of course. What did I miss?

Upgraded to Ultimate - where to go from here

Within the last week or so we upgraded to Ultimate. Is there a place to download or get this setup? The portal doesn't show the upgrade or software links. Past experience with Avid Link is disastrous and breaks our system. 

Anyone with experience in this matter? We'd like to get the software updated and use the Ultimate tools.

Bugs and issues with avid 2020.4

Hi all Avid 2020.4 here are a few bugs that I'm encountered 

1. Trying to batch transcode (with keep original frame rate) files and after a few transcodes I'm receiving this error message. i've changed from UME link to quick time, still did the same thing, opened a project with the same FPS still did it. Picture included. 

Also it linked some files twice once in two different video links. 

2. When i mark a few clips in the bin and try to right click the marks disappear and only one file is marked. the only time that it works is if I keep pressing the shift on my keyboard while I press the right click. 

3. When i try to press on the color box and right click it doesn't give me the color but gives me the right click menu. Only when I press on another line in the bin and then return to the line it gives me the option.  

 

If you haven't insights about this bugs and how it can be avoided.

Catalina + MC 2020.5.0.55039.0

Hi every one,

Well, I did something I've never done before… jumping to a new OS and a new version of MC in the same time.

So now, I'm on CATALINA and the MC version 2020.5.0 … and I AM A BIT LOST.

First, where is "NEW TITLE" ? I don't want to use NewBlue Title Pro, I juste want to use my old friend "TITLE"

One other thing, when I try to make some export the presets are not the one I saved and when I change them it 's changing the preset's name from I start (I don't know how to explain it… it is crazy).

I'm sure I'll find many other problems but this the first I saw…

Is there some one to help me ?

Importing Markers from a text file

Hi,

I have exported an Adobe Premiere AAF file to Avid (an empty sequence just with blacks and a lot of markers) and I have imported the AAF file into AMC and now I can see all my Markers in the sequence.

I have exported the markers to text file so I can import them to another sequence because AMC can't do copy/paste markers but everytime I import the .txt file I got the message:

"A marker in the file has an offset past the end of the sequence and will be ignored. Continue with this file?"

And everytime I click on Cancel the same message shows again (bug?)

 

Why is that? the markers comes from an Avid sequence to an Avid sequence.

List Tool problem on Catalina with 2020.5

I have a simple sequence with 7 video tracks.

Each track has a different clip of the same duration at the same record time.

I'm making a file_32 EDL with markers and clip names on. Using sort mode A.

Whenever I hit Previw or Update in the list tool the events are in a different random order.

Impossible to figure out which clip is on a higher track

Avid has placed the new Eucon driver v20.6 ( Mac and Win ) on the Download Center as of June 11, 2020.  Note that Download Center access requires a login & password.  Log in to the MyAvid at my.avid.com nd the DL is accessible on the bottom right.  Create an account if you dont have one already.

Important!The EUCON performance improvements included in S6 v3.5 and later makes those versions incompatible with all previous versions of EUCON and EuControl. As a result, version 3.5 and future versions must not be run on the same network (subnet) as any previous EUCON Surface software. All devices on the network must be running the same version of EUCON/EuControl. Please uninstall or remove from the same network all previous S6, System 5 Hybrid, S5-MC/MCPro, Pro Tools | Dock, Pro Tools | S3, and Artist Series software. Be sure to update other EUCON software to v3.5 or higher before using EuControl v3.5 or higher.

it's pretty simple and contains only pure reference maths.

it's available for WIN and MAC and probably MC 6+. - currently tested on 2018 and 2019 MC versions.

Digital juice

running MC 2020.5 and am looking at the Digital Juice standard or pro package.

They seem to have some good promotions, just not sure if they are a good value or not.

I'm not using After Effects.

Anyone have any feedback on using Digital Juice products within MC?

Great News!   Media Composer 2020.4 is available from Avid Link, MyAvid and the Avid Download Center (login and password required).

Before you install Media Composer 2020.4 software, please consult the ReadMe for Avid Media Composer on the Knowledge Base.

Please Note: As of Media Composer 2019.6, Avid will no longer include the Nvidia GPU drivers in the installation package. These drivers must be downloaded separately and can be found on the Nvidia website: Nvidia.com

The ability to launch Media Composer software is dependent on the status of your Upgrade and Support Plan on the date this software version was released.

Fixed in Media Composer v2020.4

     The following have been fixed:

  • Bug Number: MCCET-3429. The Segment mode and Trim type were reverted to default (Red/Yellow) after using the Smart Tool toggle to re-enabled the Smart Tool.
  • Bug Number: MCCET-3115. In some instances, Import and Export Options windows were unresponsive.
  • Bug Number: MCCET-3403. If you had many bins and at least one folder, the Sidebar and Project window bin list scrolled to the top when you closed a bin.
  • Bug Number: MCCET-3325. Title Tool text was thicker over a still image imported with Long GOP, for example, XDCAM HD 50. 
  • Bug Number: MCCET-3434. There was no audio when linking and importing .mts and .m2ts files on Media Composer v2019.12.
  •  Bug Number: MCCET-3274. On a dual monitor system, Media Composer would not maximize after you minimized the application. Note: Now, when you hover over the Windows taskbar, clicking the monitor icon will maximize the user interface across both monitors.
  • Bug Number: MCCET-3332. AAF exports from Media Composer v2018.12.8 and v2019.9 did not import into Pro Tools. 
  • Bug Number: MCCET-3164. You could not export to a P2 volume. This has been fixed. You must have Panasonic-P2 4.9.0.4 plug-in installed. 
  • Bug Number: MCCET-3448. You might have received “Assertion failed” errors and audio channels offline when opening a sequence restored from archive. 
  • Bug Number: MCCET-3451. The AudioSuite Vari-Fi effect was not working correctly.
  • Bug Number: Film-1841. (Titler+) When stepping in side the Titler effect, the track labels are now clearer: V1 appears as Bkgd and V2 appears as Video Fill. You will also notice that in the Effect Editor, Blend appears as Video Fill Opacity. 
  • Bug Number: MCDEV-12408. (Titler+) In some instances, selecting multiple items resulted in applying the same color to both items. 
  • Bug Number: MCDEV-12364. (Titler+) Some fonts are applied as Arial instead of the actual font. 
  • Bug Number: MCDEV-12378. (Titler+) Just clicking on a text box moved the text alignment. 
  • Bug Number: MCDEV-12118. (Titler+) You could not immediately perform a delete after selecting all layers from the effect editor.

  • Bug Number: MCDEV-12081. (Titler+) When selecting the eyedropper in the Effect Editor color picker, you would lose the eyedropper icon as soon as you moved the eyedropper away from the color chip. 
  • Bug Number: MCDEV-11588. (Titler+) Shapes traded places after using “send to back” from the Effect Editor. 
  • Bug Number: MCDEV-12077.  (Titler+) The Left, Center, Right alignment did not work for R-L fonts such as Arabic
  • Bug Number: MCDEV-10516. (Titler+) Gradient quadrants did not remain locked, relative to the characters when you rotated them.
  • Bug Number: MCDEV-10096. (Titler+) The mouse cursor did not change to resizing arrows when you hovered over a vertical edge of the Composer window. 
  • Bug Number: MCDEV-10079. (Titler+) The font reverted to Arial after deleting the last character using backspace. 
  • Bug Number: Film-1838. (Titler+) A keyframe was automatically created if you typed text and then moved the text bounding box. 
  • Bug Number: Film-1790. (Titler+) Performing a Recreate Title Media will now open Avid Titler + and promote the title. 
  • Bug Number: MCDEV-12317. When using some old projects, the Settings Window may have a lot of missing settings.
  • Bug Number: MCDEV-11342. If you closed the Color Correction Window in the default Color workspace, the Edit workspace did not open with the correctly sized Composer window.
  • Bug Number: MCDEV-11709. The Name column did not appear first in the Media Tool.

Please make it possible to work with Markers esiaer and doing basic stuff faster like:

- Delete a marker from within Timeline.

- Slide/Move a marker from within Timeline.

- Change the TC of a Marker (so we don't need to delete it and re-create it again).

- A shortcut/icon of displaying the Edit Marker menu.

Import Issues MC 2020.5 with Catalina 10.15.5

tdalauro - I just got a brand new MaBook Pro today and downloaded Avid 2020.5. Running on 10.15.5 Mac OS Catalina. I'm trying to import both MPEG - 4 H.264 files and Quicktime H.264 files and I can't link or import like I used to in older versions of Avid. Trying to do some reading now but if you have any suggestions on workflow or what I should use to convert and ingest the files I would greatly appreciate the feedback.

FEATURE REQUEST: Trackpad Zooming Gesture

Zooming into the timeline takes me longer than nearly any other action. Its something I do constantly.

I swear I was able to do this on earlier versions, I can remember for certain, but I cannot get it to work now.

Media Composer is the only program where I cannot instantly zoom into the timeline.

Hopefully there another way to do it instead of the interface buttons or the Focus key.

Suggestions?

Workflow to move projects between 2 PC's?

Hi All,

 

I'm looking for any workflow suggestions for the following scenario: I edit on my PC desktop at home, then in the evenings I'd like to take my project from the PC desktop to a laptop (both on windows 10). What would be the best way to share one media composer license between these two machines, and move projects back and forth between computers? I'd know how to do this in premiere, but don't know where to start with avid. I gather I'd have to set the Avid Media Files, my project folder, and my raw footage to an external drive and simply move that between the computers?

 

Any suggestions appreciated!

Re the new MOV UME export option

The new MOV export option is a great step forwards but its worth noting its not completely featured yet and one of the additions to come is the option to scale the output levels.

Currently every thing exported via the UME MOV is legal levels so no mapping is done.

If you are doing a H.264 export (for playback or web upload) 

You may want to add a legal to full levels LUT to an empty upper video track of your sequence before export.

In the middle of my annual sub for Media composer. Mid project. On version 2018 12 9 I've updated Avid link. The Avid link page shows that I am indeed activated, but has an orange button suggesting that I update MC. I want to remain on my current version. Is this stopping me signing in now?

On-screen countdown clock

Hi all,

 

I'm looking for a way to generate an on-scren countdown timer in AVID.

 

There's a point in a talk I'm cutting where a slide pauses so people can read it, and I want to put up a countdown timer on screen so people know 1) the video hasn't frozen and 2) how long until the talk resumes.

 

Is there a favoured plugin that will allow me to configure this? I don't want to have to round trip through After Effects or any other program - I'm really looking for a way to do this within AVID.

 

The only google results are pulling up threads from 2010 full of dead links.
